Grant Overview
Navigating Risks in Small Nonprofit Capacity Building
Barriers to Eligibility
Small nonprofits often face significant barriers when attempting to access capacity-building funding. Common challenges include limited operational history, insufficient staff resources to manage grant applications, and lack of familiarity with nonprofit management best practices. Organizations that cannot demonstrate a clear need for capacity-building initiatives or those which have not outlined measurable goals may find themselves disqualified.
Compliance Traps and Audit Risks
Nonprofits must adhere to specific compliance requirements tied to capacity grants. Compliance traps may involve failing to meet proper financial reporting standards or mishandling consultancy resources. Additionally, improper documentation of grant expenditures can lead to serious audit risks, jeopardizing both the nonprofit's funding and its reputation.
What Will NOT Be Funded
Funding for capacity building will not cover expenses related to capital expenditures, such as purchasing property or building facilities. It also excludes funding for direct service delivery activities that are not explicitly linked to organizational capacity enhancement, such as programming costs unrelated to operational improvement initiatives.
Disqualification Scenarios
A nonprofit may be disqualified if it fails to maintain adequate records reflecting changes in organizational capacity or does not engage with stakeholders to demonstrate a collaborative effort in building capacity. Furthermore, organizations that experience fiscal malfeasance or significant legal challenges will likely be barred from receiving these funds.
